ONE OF A SERIES OF PROFILES OF STATE COURT SYSTEMS PREPARED AS PART OF A PROJECT TO IMPLEMENT AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (ABA) STANDARDS ON COURT OPERATIONS, THIS REPORT DOCUMENTS RHODE ISLAND'S COURT STRUCTURE.
Abstract
THE INFORMATION IS PRESENTED IN THREE SECTIONS: THE OVERVIEW, THE CHARTS, AND A NARRATIVE PROFILE. IT WAS PREPARED BY THE ABA JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION DIVISION WITH STAFF SUPPORT PROVIDED BY THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR STATE COURTS. THE OVERVIEW SUMMARIZES THE MAIN BODY OF THE PROFILE AND ALSO COMMENTS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE RHODE ISLAND COURT SYSTEM AND THE ABA COURT ORGANIZATION STANDARDS. THE CHARTS ILLUSTRATE ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE, ROUTES OF APPEAL, TYPES OF JURISDICTION, AND FUNDING SOURCES. THE MAIN BODY OF THE PROFILE CONTAINS A DESCRIPTION OF EACH ASPECT OF COURT OPERATION PLUS A CHART INDICATING THE DEGREE OF SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE RHODE ISLAND COURT SYSTEM AND ABA STANDARDS. IT IS FOUND THAT THE STATE IS IN MODERATE TO HIGH AGREEMENT ON MOST OF THE STANDARDS. A LIST OF SOURCES IS APPENDED. THESE INCLUDE ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS, EXECUTIVE ORDERS, THE CONSTITUTION AND GENERAL LAWS OF RHODE ISLAND, AND STUDIES. (GLR)
