Parent groups whose common goal is to prevent drug use among young people, have grown rapidly in recent years throughout the United States.
Abstract
There are currently 4000 formal parent organizations striving to achieve a drug-free life for young people. These parent groups have unified into a nationwide parent movement, which has become the most influential force for the prevention of drug abuse in the country by affecting public laws, policies, and attitudes. The parent groups are undertaking various activities including drug abuse prevention, treatment, and drug law enforcement. The leaders of the group are volunteers with a variety of backgrounds who have worked to ensure cooperation between social and public health services. The recent decline in drug abuse has been attributed to a parent movement that has successfully formulated policies on prevention and the reduction of drug usage. 16 references.
