This publication is designed to help grantees of the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) enhance their efforts to obtain resources for youth development projects.
Abstract
The FYSB encourages communities to support young people through a youth development approach. Such an approach suggests helping young people achieve their full potential is the best way to prevent them from becoming involved in risky behavior. Youth development strategies focus on giving young people the chance to build skills, exercise leadership, form relationships with caring adults, and help their communities. The youth development approach also acknowledges that young people can rebuild communities and that helping young people requires strengthening families and communities. The FYSB administers grant programs to support locally based services for runaway and homeless youth. Guidance is offered to facilitate resource development in the context of obtaining FYSB grants and conducting organizational and strategic planning. The use of the planning process to analyze what youth organizations have to offer is discussed, options for conducting research on available resources are explored, and procedures for drafting a grant proposal are described. The role of the Internet in resource development is examined. Appendixes provide additional information on Internet search engines and reference tools.
