Designed to serve as a resource handbook for education supervisors and assistant supervisors, this two-volume handbook discusses the areas of a manager's responsibility relating to the operation of an education department within a Federal correctional institution.
Abstract
The handbook is divided into two major content areas: administrative responsibilities and procedures, and program scope and content. An outline details administrative issues such as goal setting, admission and orientation responsibilities, the establishment of an inmate program reporting system, supervision of the education program, budget planning and management, and staff training. The section on program scope and content covers such subjects as the learning resource center, the graduate education diploma (GED) and postsecondary programs, study release, and occupational education programs. Correspondence courses, and library and legal library services are detailed as are leisure activities, social education, and pre-release preparation. Special programs include artists-in-prisons (performing arts), art classes, and visiting room programs for inmates' families. Lists of course offerings in Federal correctional institutions, the education staff at those institutions, and resource materials are contained in the second volume. Federal Bureau of Prisons policy statements relating to education and education programs within Federal Bureau of Prisons policy statements relating to education and education programs within Federal institutions are also appended.
