This document presents the text of the model treaty on extradition adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1991 and recommended for use by all member countries.
Abstract
Individual sections of the treaty focus on the obligation of countries to extradite certain persons wanted in requesting countries and on the definition of extraditable offenses. Other sections cover the seven mandatory grounds for refusal of extradition, eight optional grounds for refusal of extradition, the channels of communication and the documents required, a simplified extradition procedure, certification and authentication, provisional arrest, surrender of the person, postponed or conditional surrender, surrender of property, transit, and costs.
