Abstract
Protecting a home's exterior involves such measures as keeping the exterior of the house free from shrubs and other concealment, providing good lighting, supplying solid doors with hinges that are not removable, and securing sliding glass doors. Information is provided on a variety of lock and padlocks as well as on means of securing different kinds of windows. Participation in an identification program to mark valuables is recommended. A home security checklist, home alarm purchasing guidelines, and measures to be taken when leaving town for vacations are supplied to aid the consumer. Separate instructions detail how to prevent burglaries in apartment buildings and in mobile homes. Special emphasis is placed on neighborhood awareness and cooperation in sighting suspicious activities. A series of informant guides describes factors to keep in mind when identifying suspects, characteristics for vehicle description reporting, terminology used in reporting crimes, and procedures for advising the police of crimes. Illustrations are provided.
