Abstract
RTI develops and applies methodologies to measure the presence of toxic pollutants, to determine human exposure and health effects, to evaluate risk, and to generate strategies to prevent pollution. In new areas of technology, RTI scientists and engineers are exploring the fields of semiconductors and new materials; electronics for aerospace, industrial, and biomedical applications; polymer development; and adaptations of government technologies. RTI's staff is involved in public health issues including access to health care, AIDS, quality of care, and resource needs. The Institute develops and evaluates new pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and medical devices; designs and evaluates interventions to encourage personal health behaviors; develops national data on issues including health care, long-term care, and disease prevention; researches HIV and other retroviruses; and helps developing nations meet their public health goals. Through applied statistics and social science, RTI analysts seek to maximize public resources to achieve social benefits including drug use reduction and increased energy conservation.
