TWO MAJOR TRENDS IN BRITISH AND AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL RESEARCH ARE IDENTIFIED, AND THEIR DEVELOPMENT IS TRACED FROM THE NINETEENTH CENTURY THROUGH THE PRESENT.
Abstract
PRISON RESEARCH IS CLASSIFIED INTO TWO BROAD CATEGORIES. THE FIRST IS THE UTILIZATION OF THE PRISON AS A LABORATORY. THE SECOND IS CONCERNED WITH THE STUDY OF THE PRISON AS A SOCIAL SYSTEM. THE WORK OF THE MOST PROMINENT SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCHERS IS SUMMARIZED. AN ANALYSIS IS MADE OF RECENT RESEARCH EFFORTS ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF PENAL TREATMENTS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE FUTURE OF RESEARCH LIES IN CONDUCTING SYSTEMATIC EXPERIMENTATION. GUIDELINES ARE OFFERED FOR THE CONDUCT OF PENAL RESEARCH.
