A total of 215 universities and colleges in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden were surveyed to determine the amount of completed, ongoing, and planned research on economic or white-collar crime in Scandinavia.
Abstract
Each university was sent a survey questionnaire soliciting information on research projects and the project staff. A broad definition of economic crime was used so that as much information as possible could be assembled on the state of the art. Both organized crime and crimes against the environment) such as offenses against environmental regulations and against product controls) were included in the white-collar crime category. As expected, few of the institutions (28 of the 172 institutions responding) had research to report, thus indicating the low priority white-collar crime has had. Sweden reported the largest number of research projects, probably a reflection of the Swedish Crime Prevention Council's efforts initiated in 1977 to investigate the circumstances surrounding and responses to this crime. A bibliographic listing of published research, research in progress, and planned research for all the countries is provided.
