Telephone interviews were conducted with a sample of 413 adults in the Toledo, Ohio, area to determine public attitudes toward decriminalization of prostitution.
Abstract
The findings showed little support for this notion, but revealed substantial differences regarding strategies of suppression, tolerance, or legalization. Only age and education significantly affected opinions toward these strategies. Neither attitude toward government interference in sexual privacy nor attribution of prostitutes' motivations accounted for variation in approval of strategies. In general, respondents were indifferent to prostitution and ignorant of various official responses to it. 2 tables, 4 notes, and 26 references (Author abstract modified)
