RESULTS OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN RESEARCH ON THE UTILITY OF DIFFERENT OFFENDER TREATMENTS AND PRACTICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEMS AFFECTING RESEARCH RELIABILITY.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR SUMMARIZES THE FINDINGS FROM THREE DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO TREATMENT RESEARCH - STUDIES ON OFFENDERS WHO HAVE UNDERGONE ONE PARTICULAR TREATMENT, COMPARISONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT TREATMENTS, AND ANALYSES OF TREATMENT IMPACTS ON THE ATTITUDES, VALUES, AND CONDUCT OF OFFENDERS. FACTORS WHICH LIMIT THE VALIDITY OF RESEARCH OUTCOMES ARE DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE THE CHOICE OF CRITERIA FOR MEASURING TREATMENT SUCCESS OR FAILURE, PROBLEMS IN MATCHING OFFENDERS FOR COMPARING THOSE RECEIVING DIFFERENT TREATMENTS, AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH RESEARCH RESULTS REMAIN VALID OVER TIME.
