DESCRIPTION OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM, CALLED SKETCH, THAT AIDS THE GENERATION OF SUSPECT FACIAL IMAGES FROM COMPOSITE IDENTI-KIT FEATURES.
Abstract
ALONG WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THIS COMPUTERIZED POLICE IDENTIFICATION TECHNIQUE, THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR ADOPTION BY EXISTING LAW ENFORCEMENT COMPUTER SYSTEMS. AN INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE IS EXPLAINED THAT ALLOWS CONVERSATIONAL DIALOGUES BETWEEN THE USER AND IMAGE MODIFICATION ROUTINES. IT IS EXPLAINED THAT A USER CAN KEY SUSPECT DESCRIPTIONS INTO THE SYSTEM, AND THE COMPUTER-PROGRAM DEVELOPS A SKETCHED INTERPRETATION OF THE DESCRIPTION, WHICH WILL THEN APPEAR ON A VISUAL GRAPHICS DISPLAY. USERS CAN MODIFY THE SCREEN CONTENTS VIA THE INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE AND IN SOME CASES TEACH THE MACHINE AN INTERPRETATION OF THEIR DESCRIPTIONS. TRANSCRIPTION OF A TYPICAL IDENTI-KIT FEATURE FOR COMPUTER GRAPHICS STORAGE IS DESCRIBED. ADVANTAGES TO GRAPHICS ENCODING OF COMPOSITE DRAWINGS IS ALSO DISCUSSED WITH EXAMPLES FOR ROUTING STORED IMAGES TO A DIGITAL PLOTTER, VIDEO DISPLAY, AND LINE PRINTER. THE APPENDICES COVER THE PROGRAM'S IMPLEMENTATION DETAILS, METHODS FOR OPTIMIZING DISPLAY PROCESSOR CAPABILITIES, AND A SEQUENCE OF PHOTOGRAPHS ILLUSTRATING AN ACTUAL SKETCH-USER SESSION.
