The American Humane Association convened a summit in November 1991 that focused on reducing violence toward children and animals; compiling information on causes, prevention, and treatment of abusive behavior; and identifying issues for further study.
Abstract
Summit participants were divided into four working groups to consider research, education, socialization, program and policy development, and intervention and treatment issues. They specifically examined the relationship between animal maltreatment by children and adolescents and concurrent and later antisocial behavior, cruelty to animals as a specific symptom in the psychiatric classification of conduct disorders, implications of animal maltreatment in various forms of family and community violence, and research needs in the areas of prevention and intervention. The summit report includes working group reports and recommendations and a description of the American Humane Association. 58 references
