THIS BOOK, THE SEVENTH OF SEVEN VOLUMES, IS A COMPILATION OF STUDIES AND ARTICLES REGARDING THE STATUS AND FUTURE OF CANADIAN NEWS AND TELEVISION (TV).
Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION IS A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY OF THE ELEMENTS OF THE NEWSGATHERING PROCESS. IT ELABORATES ON THE ATTITUDES AND PERCEPTIONS OF THE NEWSGATHERERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY WORK. THE LAST CHAPTER OF THIS SECTION IS RESERVED FOR CONCLUSIONS DERIVED FROM THE STUDY AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE NEWSGATHERING TECHNIQUES AND QUALITY. THE SECOND STUDY IS AN ANALYSIS OF A 3-DAY ACCUMULATION OF CANADIAN WIRE SERVICES, NEWSPAPERS, AND TELEVISION FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING WHAT PROFESSIONALS CONSIDER NEWSWORTHY. THE NEWS FLOW PATTERNS AND INFLUENCES IN ONTARIO, CANADA, ARE DESCRIBED. THE SECTION DEALING WITH THE ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF VIOLENCE IN TELEVISION AND MOTION PICTURES AND THE IMPLICATION OF NEWER TECHNOLOGIES SPECIFICALLY EXAMINES THE FILM AND TELEVISION INDUSTRIES IN CANADA AND THE U.S. CABLE AND PAY-TV ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING INFORMATION CONCERNING OTHER TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS AND POSSIBLE SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES. CONCLUSIONS AND POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS ARE OFFERED FOR REDUCTION OF VIOLENCE IN FILM AND TELEVISION. FUTURE MASS MEDIA AND POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENTS ARE ALSO TREATED AT LENGTH. ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ATTRACTIVENESS ARE WEIGHED AGAINST PRESENT AND FUTURE TECHNOLOGY. BOTH APPEAR TO BE CONTROLLED BY REGULATORY AND BUSINESS ENTANGLEMENTS. IN ANOTHER STUDY CONCERNING ALTERNATIVES FOR CANADIAN TELEVISION, THE FOCUS IS ON THE STRUCTURE OF CANADIAN BROADCASTING AND SUGGESTIONS FOR INFLUENCING AND CONTROLLING THE CONTENT OF THE BROADCASTING AVAILABLE TO CANADIANS. THE LAST ISSUE ADDRESSED CONCERNS THE CONSTITUTIONAL JURISDICTION OVER VIOLENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA INDUSTRIES. REGULATION, TARIFFS, AND FEDERAL-PROVINCIAL COOPERATION ARE DISCUSSED. INDIVIDUAL SECTIONS ARE FOLLOWED BY REFERENCES AND APPENDIXES CONTAINING CHARTS, TABLES, QUESTIONNAIRES, AND OTHER SUPPORTING MATERIALS.
