AN ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE RIKER'S ISLAND PROGRAM, WHICH IS A CO-EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO PROVIDE INMATES AND CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL WITH BASIC COLLEGE COURSES AND TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO FURTHER HIGHER EDUCATION.
Abstract
THIS PROGRAM, OPEN TO ALL QUALIFIED STUDENTS ON RIKER'S ISLAND, ENABLES THE INMATES AND STAFF MEMBERS TO ATTEND REGULAR JOHN JAY COLLEGE CLASSES AND TO RECEIVE FULL COLLEGE CREDIT FOR THEIR WORK. THIS REPORT PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE PROGRAM PROCEDURES, ENROLLMENT, TRANSFER STUDENTS, COUNSELING, AND THE EMERGENCY LOAN PROGRAM. INSTRUCTIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS OF THE PROGRAM ARE OUTLINED. STATISTICS ON COSTS, STUDENT GRADES, AND COURSE ENROLLMENTS ARE PROVIDED. IT IS NOTED THAT THE LARGE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS DO NOT COMPLETE THEIR COURSES, AND REASONS FOR THIS PROBLEM ARE LISTED.
