This report briefly describes educational programs in conflict resolution operating in 16 selected colleges, universities, and professional schools.
Abstract
All of the institutions surveyed are substantially involved in conflict resolution and have a structure and history reflecting various programs available in the United States. The information presented was obtained from written materials about the programs and from oral interviews with faculty members involved in the programs. Interviews were conducted between August 14 and August 30, 1984. Some of the programs are concentrations within a particular discipline (Colorado, Kansas, and the University of Missouri at St. Louis), several are spinoffs of more comprehensive peace studies programs (Syracuse, Kent State, and others), and a few are associated with professional programs and schools or focus solely on dispute resolution (George Mason, John Jay, and Massachusetts). Two programs are informal groupings of a particular faculty member and graduate students with common research and training interests (Buffalo and Oklahoma State). Comments by the faculty members interviewed suggest important elements in planning a conflict resolution education program. The appendix lists programs and professors included in the report.
