The United Nations (UN) expert group meeting on corruption and financial channels, held in Paris in March-April 1999, focused on the need to prevent corruption and promote good governance.
Abstract
Experts agreed that the international community should focus its efforts on the financial channels of corruption and should develop a strategy to ensure the detection of related financial flows throughout the world. In addition, experts identified the need to develop a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the prevention and punishment of corruption, including its links with organized crime and money laundering. They expressed the view that, within the context of a comprehensive strategy to deal with corruption, special attention should be paid to technical cooperation and assistance for developing countries. Specific measures at the national level to strengthen international cooperation in combating corruption were addressed at the meeting, as were measures to improve the detection of financial flows related to corruption. Annexes contain a list of meeting participants and a list of UN and other international organization documents related to corruption.
