This report is a summary of data reported by California public school districts for the school year beginning July 1, 1985 and ending June 30, 1986 on the incidence of crime.
Abstract
The data (which may be incomplete since some districts failed to report or underreported the incidence of crime) revealed a total of 162,734 crime and violence incidence on school grounds or at school-related events. Of all incidents, 46 percent were crimes against property totaling a loss of $23,338,028. Thirty-seven percent included acts of violence against students, school personnel, and others on campus or at school-related events. Seventeen percent included incidents of drug or alcohol abuse and possession of weapons. Of the 15 homicides reported, 2 involved student victims and 1 occurred on school grounds in the daytime. Recommendations include stricter adherence to reporting of school crimes accurately and consistently, and developing a safe school model for the middle-grade level. (Summary modified)
