EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE OPTIMAL STRATEGY FOR MONITORING SEVERAL CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION CAMERAS SIMULTANEOUSLY IN ORDER TO DETECT TRAFFIC INCIDENTS.
Abstract
THE EXPERIMENT SIMULATED THE FOLLOWING THREE SIMPLE ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS-MONITORING THE OUTPUT OF A SINGLE TELEVISION CAMERA, MONITORING THE OUTPUT OF THREE CAMERAS WITH ALL THREE OUTPUTS BEING ON VIEW ALL THE TIME, AND MONITORING THE OUTPUT OF THREE CAMERAS, ONLY ONE OF WHICH COULD BE SEEN AT A TIME. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT IF MORE THAN ONE TELEVISION PICTURE HAS TO BE MONITORED AT A CONTROL POINT, THE AVERAGE TIME TAKEN TO DETECT INCIDENTS WILL BE INCREASED, FOR THE OBSERVER MAY BE LOOKING AT ONE OF THE OTHER DISPLAYS WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURS. IF AN OBSERVER DOES MONITOR THREE TELEVISION PICTURES, ALL THREE SHOULD BE DISPLAYED SIMULTANEOUSLY ON THREE SEPARATE SCREENS. IF ONLY ONE PICTURE CAN BE SEEN AT A TIME, CONSIDERABLE DELAYS MAY OCCUR IN DETECTING INCIDENTS PICKED UP BY THE OTHER TELEVISION CAMERAS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
