MULTI-MODALITY AFTERCARE TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR FEDERAL PROBATIONERS AND PAROLEES EMPHASIZING INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING.
Abstract
THE LOS ANGELES SUICIDE PREVENTION CENTER AND INSTITUTE FOR STUDIES OF LIFE-THREATENING BEHAVIORS HAS A CONTRACT WITH THE BUREAU OF PRISONS, TO PROVIDE AFTERCARE TREATMENT SERVICES FOR FEDERAL PAROLEES IN THE GREATER LOS ANGELES AREA WHO HAD BEEN COMMITTED TO FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS UNDER THE NARCOTIC ADDICT REHABILITATION ACT OF 1966. THE PROGRAM ALSO PROVIDES REHABILITATION SERVICES TO FEDERAL PROBATIONERS AND PAROLEES WHO HAVE BEEN REFERRED BECAUSE OF DRUG-RELATED DIFFICULTIES. COUNSELORS VISIT THE TERMINAL ISLAND FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION TO COORDINATE A TREATMENT PLAN PRIOR TO AN INMATE'S RELEASE TO THE PROGRAM. THE PRIMARY TREATMENT VEHICLE IS INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING, IN ADDITION TO PSYCHIATRIC CONSULTATION. METHADONE MAINTENANCE AND DETOXIFICATION IS PROVIDED ALONG WITH A JOB PLACEMENT PROGRAM, AND AN OUTREACH PROGRAM IN WHICH AFTERCARE SERVICES ARE MAINTAINED FOR PATIENTS STILL EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTY. A RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CENTER IS ALSO AVAILABLE. AN ONGOING EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT IS CONDUCTED WITH DATA COMING FROM RESULTS OF URINE TESTS, ARREST DATA, EMPLOYMENT, AND COUNSELOR'S RATINGS. THE EVALUATION RESULTS INDICATE THAT A DEDICATED STAFF AND A MULTIMODALITY APPROACH YIELD THE MOST POSITIVE RESULTS IN THE TREATMENT OF ADDICTED OFFENDERS.
