This book describes the components and administration of Aggression Replacement Training (ART) which is designed to alter the behavior of delinquent youths to facilitate their positive functioning in the community.
Abstract
ART's constituent features focus on psychological skills, anger control, and moral reasoning. The program was initially used with incarcerated youths, and evaluations proved it effective in enhancing psychological skills, reducing anger and aggression, and raising levels of moral reasoning. This book first examines previous efforts to intervene with juvenile delinquents in community settings. ART -- its rationale, procedures, and materials -- are then described, followed by full practitioner-oriented descriptions of the applications of ART procedures to participating youths and families. A description of program evaluation procedures and results includes the full protocol core as well the outcome findings. An administrative perspective on community-based delinquency intervention is presented, highlighting issues and policies that must be addressed before such interventions can be effective. The concluding chapter projects a future, expanded program for teaching psychological competencies that include the family, school, work, and other community contexts.
