EARLY CAREER SELECTION IS FOLLOWED BY FORMALIZED, CENTRALIZED TRAINING, INCLUDING MANDATORY COURSE WORK AND INTERNSHIPS IN COURT, POLICE AND BUSINESS SETTINGS.
Abstract
WHILE CERTAIN FEATURES OF THE FRENCH SYSTEM OF JUDICIAL TRAINING ARE DEEMED OF LITTLE USE IN THE UNITED STATES BECAUSE OF DIFFERENCES IN THE TWO SYSTEMS, OTHERS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR CONSIDERATION. THESE FEATURES INCLUDE REQUIRED REFRESHER COURSES IN CRIMINAL LAW, SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSES WITH AN EMPHASIS ON PSYCHOLOGY, AND COURSES IN JUDICIAL TECHNIQUES SUCH AS SENTENCING. THE REQUIREMENT THAT JUDGES SERVE INTERNSHIPS IN POLICE AND CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS IS PROMOTED AS A WAY OF REDUCING THE CURRENT LACK OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE COURTS, POLICE AND CORRECTIONS.
