THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, U.S. BUREAU OF PRISONS, OFFERS SUGGESTIONS ON HOW RECREATION CAN AND SHOULD BE USED AS A PART OF THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS IN THE PRISONS.
Abstract
RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS CAN BE STRUCTURED TO TEACH INMATES TO WORK TOGETHER, TO ACCEPT THE LEADERSHIP ROLES OF OTHERS, AND TO USE LEISURE TIME CONSTRUCTIVELY. A SYSTEM OF REWARDS MAY BE INCORPORATED INTO RECREATION AND USED TO MODIFY BEHAVIOR. THE AUTHOR FURTHER RECOMMENDS THAT RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS INCLUDE MENTAL HEALTH CLASSES AND MENTAL HEALTH DISCUSSION GROUPS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
