DISCUSSION OF RECENT RESEARCH ON THE SOCIETAL REACTION TO DEVIANCE, AND STUDIES OF FORMAL AGENCIES OF SOCIAL CONTROL, WITH EMPHASIS UPON THE POLICE.
Abstract
THE PAPER COVERS AREAS OF RECENT WORK CONSTITUTING NEW THEORETICAL ORIENTATIONS OF LIKELY FUTURE INTEREST, WHICH BEAR ON OLDER THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENTS STILL UNDERGOING EVALUATION, AND WHICH INDICATE CHANGES IN THE SOCIAL OBJECTS OF RESEARCH. BROADLY SPEAKING, ATTENTION HAS SHIFTED FROM A FOCUS ON THE SOURCES AND ETIOLOGY OF DEVIANCE TO THE ANALYSIS OF PROCESSES OF SOCIAL CONTROL. THE AUTHOR PAYS CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION TO DECISION MAKING BY THE POLICE, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARD TO THE PROCESSING OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
