Capital punishment is discussed.
Abstract
This article discusses the status of the death penalty in the United States compared with pertinent international developments. Included in the discussion are a brief review of the historical background of the death penalty, selected U.S. Supreme Court cases since 1972 including procedural fairness issues before the Court in recent cases, death penalty challenges, and an overview of Federal and State death penalty legislation and international instruments regarding imposition of the death penalty. The author concludes by recommending that the United States join the majority of western nations in abolishing the death penalty.
