THE MISUSE OF COMMON PSYCHIATRIC LABELS BY PSYCHIATRIC AND NON PSYCHIATRIC PERSONNEL IS DETRIMENTAL TO PATIENTS.
Abstract
IN THE DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISORDERS, PUBLISHED IN 1968 BY THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION, THERE ARE CHANGES IN DIAGNOSTIC CATEGORIES, AND CHANGES AND CLARIFICATIONS OF CRITERIA FOR USE OF THE VARIOUS DIAGNOSES. THIS REPORT REVIEWS CHANGES MOST COMMONLY USED BY NONPSYCHIATRIC PERSONNEL WHO USE, OR REVIEW REPORTS WHICH USE, PSYCHIATRIC LABELS, PARTICULARLY PERSONNEL IN THE CORRECTIONAL FIELD OR MENTAL HEALTH CENTERS. TERMS SUCH AS PSYCHOTIC, SEXUAL DEVIANT, NEUROTIC, PARANOID, SCHIZOPHRENIC ARE DEFINED IN LINE WITH THE NEW ORDER OF NOMENCLATURE. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE NECESSITY FOR CORRECT COMMUNICATION AMONG THE MEMBERS OF THE PATIENT'S TREATMENT TEAM, BY USE OF THE PROPER TERMINOLOGY.
