Annotation
This book places the street fighting which overwhelmed the cities of England in 1981 alongside a number of other similar crises in public order over the past 160 years as a means to illustrate some of the radical changes which have occurred during that time in the agencies of the State involved in the repression of disorder.
Abstract
Focusing on the developing relations between the three principal agencies of the State involved in the repression of civil disorder, namely, the magistracy, the police, and the army, the book combines narrative accounts of specific historical incidents with structural analysis of the development of relations between the agencies themselves. It documents in detail the regulation of public disorder during this period and the contemporary power of the police to "clear the streets" with the assistance of a more subordinate magistracy. 468 footnotes and 376 references
