REFERENCE WORK CONTAINING PROFILES OF READING IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS DEVELOPED BY PUBLIC AND COMMERCIAL GROUPS WHICH CAN BE USEFUL IN PRISON AND JAIL REMEDIAL PROGRAMS.
Abstract
EACH PROFILE INDICATES THE CHARACTERISTICS AND COST OF SUCH PROGRAMS, (WHETHER MANUAL OR AUTOMATED), WHAT KIND OF TEACHER ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED, WHAT KIND OF TESTING IS INVOLVED, AND WHAT KINDS OF STUDENTS, (ADULTS, CHILDREN, FOREIGN LANGUAGE), CAN BE EFFECTIVELY REACHED. LISTS OF USERS ARE PROVIDED FOR CORRECTIONAL EDUCATORS SO THEY MAY CONSIDER THE SUCCESSES AND PROBLEMS OF PARTICULAR PROGRAMS BEFORE UNDERTAKING THE EXPENSE OF A NEW PROGRAM. DATA IS ALSO PROVIDED ON VOLUNTEER TUTORING PROGRAMS AND THE COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECTS OF THE FEDERAL 'RIGHT TO READ PROGRAM' OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION AND WELFARE. THIS LATTER INFORMATION CAN BE OF ASSISTANCE IN CONNECTION WITH PRISON AND JAIL REMEDIAL PROGRAMS. FINALLY, SKETCHES OF READING PROGRAMS ACTUALLY CONDUCTED IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE INCLUDED. THIS IS THE FIRST TOOL, OF ITS KIND, DESIGNED TO GUIDE THE CORRECTIONAL EDUCATOR THROUGH THE BEWILDERING MAZE OF PROGRAMS AND COURSES DEALING WITH LITERACY PROBLEMS IN DISADVANTAGED ADULT AND YOUTH POPULATIONS.
