DESCRIPTION OF THE INDIVIDUALIZED READING PROGRAM WHICH ATTEMPTS TO PREPARE NON-READING STUDENTS TO READ ON A FUNCTIONAL LEVEL AND TO PREPARE AN AVERAGE READER TO PASS THE GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TEST (GED).
Abstract
FACED WITH A DIFFICULT-AGED STUDENT (14-23 YEARS), THE EDUCATIONAL STAFF AT THE ROBERT F. KENNEDY YOUTH CENTER TRIES TO PROVIDE A HIGHLY MOTIVATING PROGRAM TO REACH ITS COED POPULATION. THE LESSONS FOR EACH STUDENT ARE BASED ON PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES. A BATTERY OF TESTS IS ADMINISTERED TO THE STUDENT TO IDENTIFY THE APPROPRIATE READING LEVEL FOR THE INITIAL PLACEMENT. THE PROGRAMS FOR THE VARIOUS READING LEVELS ARE BRIEFLY OUTLINED. THE YOUTH CENTER USES POINTS CONVERTED TO MONEY TO REWARD POSITIVE BEHAVIOR IN THE STUDENTS. POINTS ARE GIVEN FOR COMPLETION OF PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES, AND RECORDS ARE KEPT OF THE OBJECTIVES AND POINTS COMPLETED. SEVERAL BONUS SYSTEMS WHICH PROVIDE ADDED INCENTIVES TO THE STUDENT ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. A LIST OF THE ASSESSMENT TOOLS AND READING MATERIALS USED, AND A SAMPLE OF THE STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
