This article discusses using cable TV to improve communications between police and the communities they serve.
Abstract
The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Police Department has worked for six years with the city's cable TV companies to develop and produce programs that promote community policing efforts while providing useful police- and crime-related information to viewers. The joint effort has resulted in programs in three formats: a live call-in show, a talk show, and a show to alert and solicit information from viewers as to the possible presence of fugitives in the community. The article provides information on contract negotiations for such programming; staffing; program procedures; legal considerations; resources needed, including police personnel to be involved in research, writing and other pre-production activities; and rating the impact. The article concludes that public access cable TV programming offers an unparalleled outlet for law enforcement agencies to inform the public and enhance their presence in the community. Notes
