This manual for professionals who deal with victims of rape and sexual assault addresses all stages of rape victim care, from arrival at the emergency room through evidence collection, role of the criminal justice system, and counseling.
Abstract
The introductory chapter on rape myths explains why they are myths rather than facts. Suggestions for handling the rape victim in the emergency room focus on sensitizing staff so they can provide treatment that does not increase distress. The guide also gives advice on reimbursement of hospital costs, preparing a medical history, and conducting the medical examination without upsetting the victim further. Steps to help physicians collect evidence properly are outlined. Other sections discuss information about venereal disease and pregnancy that professionals should tell victims, exit procedures, police procedures and interviewing techniques, and ways a prosecutor's office can improve its response to rape victims. The book describes basic crisis intervention techniques for victims and problems they may develop in the short-term. Also discussed is therapeutic intervention for a victim's family and friends. Each chapter considers special treatment approaches for child victims. The appendixes contain procedure descriptions and forms developed by experts and rape treatment centers across the country. Topics covered include victim's rights, medical reports and examinations, crisis intervention, followup counseling, investigative procedures, and rape prevention programs. Approximately 25 references are supplied.
