Abstract
Excerpts from 30 Rand publications suggest the scope and character of current work. The excerpt from criminal justice research deals with the reasons for and effects of mandatory sentences. The findings show that mandatory minimum sentences can reduce crime through incapacitation, but substantial increases in prison populations will be required to achieve modest reductions in adult crime. The categories of research for 1978-1979 were applied science and technology; communications; criminal justice (career criminals, the criminal investigation process, juvenile criminals, and the sentencing process); defense strategy, forces, and support systems; education; energy, environment, and natural resources; health; housing; human resources; information systems; international studies (economics, politics, and technology); regional and urban problems; regulatory issues; and studies in research, development, and acquisition. One section lists the titles of Rand reports and notes issued for general distribution and books published during 1978-1979. The Rand Graduate Institute is described, and the personnel and structure of Rand Corporation administration are presented. The presentation of indexes and bibliographies, along with subscription libraries in various States, indicates access to Rand publications.
