THE SPEAKER ON THIS TAPE IS A PROFESSOR OF CURRICULUM AT KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY WHO DISCUSSES THE INTERRELATION BETWEEN RACISM, SEXISM, ELITISM, CURRICULUM BIAS, AND VIOLENT CONFRONTATIONS.
Abstract
RACISM IS DEFINED AS A BELIEF, A FRAMEWORK FOR THINKING. IT IS NOT THE ACUTAL ACTING-OUT BEHAVIOR, BUT A BELIEF SYSTEM THAT DICTATES A BEHAVIOR. POWER, PREJUDICE, AND RACISM ARE INTERRELATED. CURRICULUM CONSISTS OF THE FORMAL SUBJECTS ON WHICH STUDENTS ARE GRADED, SCHOOL ACTIVITIES (SUCH AS SAFETY PATROLS, SPORTS, SCHOOL PLAYS), AND GUIDANCE COUNSELING. THE CURRICULUM IS GUILTY OF ALL THREE 'ISMS - RACISM, SEXISM, AND ELITISM. IT IS NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE EFFECTS THAT CURRICULUM BIAS HAS ON ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION AND SELF-CONCEPT TO APPRECIATE THE POTENTIAL IT HAS FOR ENGENDERING VIOLENT CONFRONTATION. TO AVOID THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF STRUCTURAL DISCRIMINATION, TEACHERS SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO HAVE SOME SORT OF EXPERIENCE WITH THE LIFE-STYLES OF HIS/ HER LEARNERS AND, ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT, READING MATERIALS NEED TO REFLECT POSITIVELY ON THE LIFESTYLES OF THE LEARNERS AND PUT FORWARD POSITIVE CULTURAL MODELS. A COMPLETE STOP MUST BE MADE OF ALL RACIALLY AND RELIGIOUSLY DISCRIMATORY CURRICULA.
