THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE QUEENSLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT (AUSTRALIA) FOR 1976-1977 IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
DURING 1976-1977, POLICE MORALE HAS IMPROVED, NEW POLICIES HAVE BEEN FORMULATED, RECRUITING HAS INTENSIFIED, AND AN INCREASED RAPPORT WITH THE QUEENSLAND POLICE UNION OF EMPLOYEES HAS DEVELOPED. HOWEVER, IMPROVEMENT IS STILL NEEDED IN POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF OFFENSES RECORDED IN THE PAST YEAR WAS 127,147, INCLUDING ALL CRIMINAL OFFENSES AND OFFENSES AGAINST GOOD ORDER. THIS WAS A SIGNIFICANT DROP OF 5,081 OVER THE OFFENSES REPORTED DURING THE PREVIOUS YEAR. IN THE CATEGORIES OF MORE SERIOUS CRIME SUCH AS HOMICIDE, ROBBERIES, SERIOUS ASSAULT, RAPE, AND BREAKING AND ENTERING, THERE WERE 25,040 OFFENSES OFFENSES REPORTED, A 6-PERCENT REDUCTION OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. THE OVERALL NUMBER OF OFFENSES CLEARED THIS YEAR INCREASED 4 PERCENT OVER LAST YEAR. THESE IMPROVED RESULTS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO STREAMLINING POLICE FUNCTIONS AND INCREASING EFFICIENCY. HOWEVER, OF PARTICULAR CONCERN IN THIS YEAR'S STATISTICS IS THE INCREASING INVOLVEMENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE (UNDER 17 YEARS) IN MORE SERIOUS CRIMINAL OFFENSES. TO REDUCE THIS PROBLEM, GREATER EMPHASIS IS BEING PLACED ON COUNSELING THESE YOUNG OFFENDERS AND THEIR PARENTS. THE REPORT PRESENTS INFORMATION AND DATA ON VARIOUS CATEGORIES OF CRIME: TRAFFIC; POLICE TRAINING; PUBLIC ORDER; LAND, SEA, AND AIR SEARCHES; MANPOWER, FINANCIAL, AND MATERIAL RESOURCES; DEPARTMENTAL OBJECTIVES FOR 1977-78;/AND NAMES OF OFFICERS WHO RECEIVED AWARDS. APPENDIXES PRESENT STATISTICAL TABLES ON VARIOUS OFFENSES, TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND VIOLATIONS, ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS, AND RESOURCES AND MATERIALS. PHOTOGRAPHS AND FOOTNOTES ARE INCLUDED. (PRG)
