COMMENTS ON THE USE OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA, OPINIONS ABOUT IT, AND FINDINGS OF A SURVEY.
Abstract
THERE IS A HIGH INCIDENCE OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA THAT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE MURDER RATE THERE. SOME ABOLITIONISTS FEEL THAT THERE IS A DISCRIMINATORY TENDENCY IN THE PATTERNS OF EXECUTIONS. EFFORTS IN 1945 TO ABOLISH CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FAILED. A SURVEY CONDUCTED TO SHOW HOW MANY PEOPLE FAVORED RETENTION OR ABOLITION OF THE DEATH PENALTY SHOWED THE MAJORITY FAVORED RETENTION. DISCUSSION CENTERS ON FACTORS AFFECTING RESPONSES, SUCH AS EDUCATION.
