BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH MEMBERS OF ATTORNEYS GENERAL'S STAFFS AND A 1975 SURVEY OF ATTORNEYS GENERAL'S OFFICES, THIS MANUAL PROVIDES INFORMATION AND SUGGESTIONS ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATION OF PUBLIC INFORMATION PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THIS MANUAL IS ONE OF A SERIES OF MANAGEMENT MANUALS WHICH HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED BY THE COMMITTEE ON THE OFFICE OF ATTORNEY GENERAL TO HELP THE ATTORNEYS GENERAL IMPROVE THE OPERATION OF THEIR OFFICES. AFTER DISCUSSION OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND PURPOSE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION PROGRAMS, THE MANUAL OUTLINES THREE MAJOR AREAS OF PUBLIC INFORMATION ACTIVITIES: THE MEDIA, PUBLICATIONS OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, AND DIRECT PUBLIC CONTACT. FOR EACH OF THESE AREAS, THE VARIOUS TYPES OF ACTIVITIES WHICH CAN BE CARRIED OUT ARE EXAMINED. SAMPLE PUBLIC INFORMATION RELEASES ARE PROVIDED, AND SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS ON PREPARING PUBLIC INFORMATION ACTIVITIES ARE GIVEN. SEVERAL STATE PUBLIC INFORMATION PROGRAMS ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. FINALLY, THE ROLE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION SPECIALISTS IN THE OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL IS EXAMINED.
