Eighteen papers derived mainly, from the 1983 International Conference on Psychological Abuse of Children and Youth address basic perspectives, domains, and interdisciplinary perspectives associated with the psychological maltreatment of children and youth.
Abstract
Three papers on basic perspectives identify the threat which psychological maltreatment poses to children and society and explores the degree to which psychological maltreatment is the core component of child abuse. The third paper focuses on the direct and indirect forms of psychological maltreatment and relationships between physical and psychological abuse. Ten papers discuss aspects of child psychological maltreatment in various domains, including corporal punishment, sexual abuse, substance abuse, emotional neglect and stimulus deprivation, and caretaking lacking in psychological nourishment. Other domains of psychological maltreatment considered are the influence of negative and limiting models, prejudice and cultural bias, racism, social system maltreatment, and dangerous and limiting models. All of the foregoing papers address the historical backgrounds, definitions, demographics, psychological effects, prevention, treatment, and research pertaining to the domain. Five papers consider interdisciplinary perspectives that involve the law's response to child emotional abuse; the impact of education and school; and psychological theory, research, and ethical issues.
