THE AUTHOR USES TWO ASSUMPTIONS OF NUCLEAR DETERRENCE THEORY - THE RATIONALITY OF THE DECISION-MAKER AND THE THREATENING INTERACTION - TO EXAMINE THE THEORY OF CRIME DETERRENCE RELATING TO THE USE OF POLICE DOGS.
Abstract
HE CONCLUDES THAT PSYCHOLOGICAL DETERRENCE PRODUCED BY THE PATROL DOG IS DEPENDENT NOT ONLY ON THE VISIBILITY BUT ALSO UPON THE CREDIBILITY OF THE RELEASE POLICY EMPLOYED. HE POINTS OUT THAT NO AMOUNT OF PUBLICIZING OR PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS WILL DETER THE CRIMINAL OR SUSPECT IF HE DOES NOT BELIEVE THAT THE MILITARY POLICE PATROL DOG HANDLER CAN, AND WILL, RELEASE THE PATROL DOG TO PREVENT CERTAIN COURSES OF ACTION.
