SUMMARY OF A STUDY TO DEFINE EDUCATIONAL CONDITIONS WHICH WILL FACILITATE THE RAPID IMPROVEMENT OF READING DEFICIENCES.
Abstract
FORTY - FOUR BOYS FROM THE NEW JERSEY STATE TRAINING SCHOOL FOR BOYS PARTICIPATED IN THIS SIX - WEEK PROGRAM. ALL HAD BEEN SELECTED BECAUSE OF THEIR APPARENT ACADEMIC POTENTIAL, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE SEVERAL YEARS BELOW AGE - APPROPRIATE PERFORMANCE LEVELS FOR READING SKILLS. INDIVIDUALIZED, SELF - INSTRUCTION WAS USED WITH MATERIAL THAT MATCHED THE STUDENTS' INTEREST AND LEVEL OF READING ABILITY. THE GRADE - LEVEL GAIN IN READING SPEED, ACCURACY, VOCABULARY AND COMPREHENSION WAS MEASURED. FROM POST TEST RESULTS, THE AUTHORS CONCLUDED THAT SUCH A SHORT TERM PROGRAM CAN SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT THE READING PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF ACADEMIC FAILURE.
