This study examines the relationship between self-reported history of five types of perceived victimization (physical, sexual, coercive, verbal, and neglect) and measures of hostility, negative aggression, and provocation in samples of (prosocial) firefighters and (antisocial) incarcerated felons.
Abstract
The subjects completed the Lifespan Violent Survey Schedule, the Novaco Provocation Inventory, and the Buss-Durkee Hostility and Aggression Inventories. The felons reported significantly higher mean numbers of victimization incidents of all types, except verbal, than did firefighters. Prisoners also reported higher levels of aggression and hostility. Fourteen of the 15 behavior- abuse correlations, with the exception of the sexual-provocation relationship, were significant when the two samples were considered collectively. The two groups did differ in the pattern of behavioral-abuse correlations. 5 tables, 4 notes, and 19 references
