This report defines the minimum acceptable standards for municipal police agencies in British Columbia, Canada and is designed to promote uniform policing standards to benefit both the police and the public.
Abstract
The standards were developed through a review of the literature on police standards and by reviewing recent reports, legislation, policy and procedure agencies, and other sources. The 440 standards are organized into 5 chapters covering 38 topics. The section on the police role and responsibilities addresses the police function, use of force, and cooperation between police departments. The chapter on agency management covers organizational and management principles, planning, research, and crime analysis. Further sections cover personnel management, general and specialized operations involved in the functions common to all police departments, and support services such as communications and records. Each standard includes the mandatory standard and supplementary notes provided for clarification. Glossary, index, and 32 references
