CORRECTIONS HAVE LITTLE PRESTIGE NOT ONLY AMONG THE POPULATION BUT ALSO EVEN AMONG JUDGES, WHO SCARELY EVER TAKE ANY INTEREST IN WHAT HAPPENS TO THE OFFENDERS THEY SENTENCE.
Abstract
THIS SUBORDINATE POSITION OF CORRECTIONS WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS PARTIALLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT LEGAL SCIENCE AND LEGISLATIVE BODIES HAVE NOT SUCCEEDED IN PROVIDING IT WITH A SATISFACTORY LEGAL BASIS. THE NEW WEST GERMAN CORRECTIONS LAW SHOULD PROVIDE FOR THE INVOLVEMENT OF CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL, THE POPULATION AND THE INMATES THEMSELVES IN A COORDINATED, CONCERTED REHABILITATION EFFORT FOR EXCEEDING ANY SUCH EFFORT IN THE PAST. TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS SHOULD CONTINUE BEYOND THE PERIOD OF THEIR INCARCERATION, AND THE NEW LAW SHOULD MAKE PROVISION FOR FINANCING THIS. --IN GERMAN
