VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES FOR EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION BY A PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTOR'S MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (PROMIS) AND ITS MANAGEMENT REPORT PACKAGE ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE FUNCTIONS OF A PROSECUTOR, HIS RELATIONS WITH OTHER AGENCIES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND HIS ROLE IN THE OPERATION OF THE COURT ARE BRIEFLY SUMMARIZED. THE NECESSITY OF ADEQUATE INFORMATION FOR PROSECUTORIAL PERFORMANCE IS EXPLAINED. STATISTICAL INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE BASIC PROMIS PLAN INCLUDES REPORTS INDICATING NUMBERS OF FELONY CASES, DISPOSITIONS BY TYPE OF CASE, CASES PENDING AT VARIOUS POINTS IN THE PROSECUTIVE PROCESS, AND OTHER DATA. THE MANAGEMENT REPORT PACKAGE SUPPLEMENTS THESE SERVICES. A PROSECUTOR REQUESTS MANAGEMENT REPORTS BY: SELECTING THE REPORT TYPE(S), SPECIFYING THE CHARGE TYPE(S), INDICATING THE TIME PERIOD(S) AND BRANCH OFFICE(S), DESIGNATING THE REPORT VERSION, AND DECIDING WHETHER TO 'FINE TUNE' THE REPORT. THERE ARE 13 REPORT TYPES AVAILABLE, INCLUDING CASE INTAKE STATISTICS, RELEASE AND BAIL DECISIONS, AND PENDING CASE STATUS. CHARGE TYPES CAN BE BROAD OR NARROW, E.G., ARMED ROBBERY, ROBBERY, ALL OTHER FELONIES. REPORTS MAY BE FURTHER LIMITED OR 'FINE TUNED,' BY THE ADDITION OF A TERM SUCH AS 'MALE DEFENDANT' OR THE NAME OF A CERTAIN JUDGE TO THE REQUEST. SEVERAL EXAMPLES OF REQUESTS PROSECUTORS CAN MAKE ARE PRESENTED, AND EACH OF THE 13 REPORT TYPES IS BRIEFLY REVIEWED. SAMPLE MANAGEMENT REPORT PACKAGES SHOWING THE DATA AND FORMAT USED.
