DATA CONCERNING THE SUPPLY OF MINORITY GROUP MEMBERS IN OCCUPATIONS RELATING TO CORRECTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR 1975, AND PROJECTIONS ARE MADE FOR THE NUMBER EXPECTED TO BE IN THESE OCCUPATIONS FROM 1975 TO 1980.
Abstract
MINORITIES CONSTITUTE APPROXIMATELY 16.8 PERCENT OF THE UNITED STATES POPULATION AND MAKE UP ABOUT 49 PERCENT OF THE INMATES OF FEDERAL AND STATE PRISONS. ONLY ABOUT 8 PERCENT OF CORRECTIONAL EMPLOYEES ARE MINORITY GROUP MEMBERS, AND MINORITIES ARE ABSENT OR UNDER-REPRESENTED IN THE MIDDLE AND TOP LEVEL ADMINISTRATIVE, PROFESSIONAL, AND SUPERVISORY RANKS OF CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL. TO AID LONG-TERM EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MINORITY CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL, THE STUDY PROVIDES INFORMATION CONCERNING THE SUPPLY OF MINORITY GROUP MEMBERS EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE IN SPECIFIED PROFESSIONS RELATED TO CORRECTIONS. THOSE INCLUDE ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTORS, PHYSICIANS, SOCIAL WORKERS, LIBRARIANS, AND LAWYERS. THE STUDY CONSIDERED THE PRESENT SUPPLY OF PERSONNEL IN EACH OCCUPATIONAL GROUP, THE PRESENT SUPPLY OF MINORITY PERSONNEL IN EACH, THE EXPECTED RATE OF GROWTH FOR THE OCCUPATION, AND OTHER RELEVANT DATA. FACTORS AFFECTING THE SUPPLY OF MINORITY GROUP PROFESSIONALS, SUCH AS SIZE AND COMPOSITION OF THE LABOR FORCE, EDUCATIONAL PROJECTIONS, AND DEMAND FOR COLLEGE-EDUCATED WORKERS, ARE EXAMINED. INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONS ARE DISCUSSED, AND CURRENT AND PROJECTED SUPPLY OF EACH ARE EVALUATED. IT WAS FOUND THAT MINORITY GROUPS ARE PRESENTLY UNDER-REPRESENTED IN MOST CORRECTIONS-RELATED OCCUPATIONS, AND WILL STILL BE IN 1980. THE SITUATION IS SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER ONLY IN NURSING, SOCIAL WORK, AND TEACHING. SUPPORTING DATA ARE PROVIDED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE THAT: EFFORTS BE MADE TO MAKE STUDENTS IN SPECIALIZED OCCUPATIONS MORE AWARE OF CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN CORRECTIONS; UNIVERSITIES BE HELPED TO INCREASE OR DEVELOP CORRECTIONS-RELATED COURSES OR SUBSPECIALTIES; AND SCHOLARSHIP OR FELLOWSHIP ASSISTANCE TIED TO POSTGRADUATE WORK IN CORRECTIONS BE PROVIDED. SUPPORTING STATISTICS ARE PROVIDED.
