The latest prison population projections for England and Wales indicate that the total prison population will increase to 74,500 by the year 2005, an increase of 19,200 from the average population of 55,300 in 1996.
Abstract
The estimates also indicate that the sentenced adult male population will rise to 47,500 in 2005 from 34,800 in 1996. The population of sentenced male young offenders is projected to rise to 9,900 in 2005, from 6,500 in 1996. The remand population is projected to increase to 13,700 in 2005 compared with 11,500 in 1996. The female inmate population is projected to increase to 3,500 in 2005 from 2,300 in 1996. The estimates take account of the estimated effects of known policy and legislative changes that will affect the prison population. However, the projections do not include the estimated effects of proposed policy or legislative changes. Figures, tables, and notes
