This article describes the characteristics of a progressive firearms training program for security officers.
Abstract
Armed security officers must receive effective firearms training if they are to use their firearms appropriately and effectively. After carefully selecting officers to be armed, a comprehensive written firearms policy should be issued and explained to all armed guards. Classroom instruction should be accompanied by a written examination that documents each officer's grasp of the material. Firing range training should be supervised by qualified instructors and simulate typical situations of firearms use. Training must include multiple target shooting, dimlight shooting, and the tactical use of cover. There should be qualification firing on a well designed course and requalification at regular intervals. Training in when and when not to use a firearm should be used repetitively to condition officers in correct split-second decisionmaking. Each officer's performance in firearms training must be documented to ensure proof of adequate training for any officer involved in a liability case related to firearms use. 13 footnotes.
