Abstract
THE REPORT DEALS PRIMARILY AND IN DEPTH WITH AN EVALUATION AND COMPARISON OF THE 9MM SMITH AND WESSON MODEL 59 AUTOMATIC PISTOL AND THE TRADITIONAL .38 CALIBER POLICE SPECIAL. OUTSTANDING FEATURES OF THE MODEL 59 AND THE RESULTS OF ITS RANGE TESTING ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS THAT THE MODEL 59 BE ADOPTED AS THE BASIC WEAPON TO BE CARRIED WHILE BOTH ON AND OFF-DUTY AND OUTLINES PROCUREMENT RECOMMENDATIONS. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES - SPECIFICATIONS FOR COMPARISON, COMMENTS BY OTHER AGENCIES, PROCEDURES FOR CHANGING OVER TO NEW HANDGUNS, SUGGESTIONS ON THE PURCHASING OF NEW WEAPONS AND LEATHER GEAR, THE DISPOSAL OF PRESENT EQUIPMENT, AND A TRAINING PROGRAM TO BE USED IF THE NEW WEAPON IS ADOPTED.
