STARS, the generic accident reconstruction (AR) software program offered by Soft-Tec Computer Services, provides most of the calculations required for accident reconstruction problems and has several unique features.
Abstract
STARS has over 12 built-in features for AR. Options include determining speed from locked wheels with skidmarks, critical speed on curves, fall and vault speeds, and the speed to swerve and change lanes. There are equations for time and distance, combined speed, kinetic energy, and speed to hydroplane. Based on data obtained from measuring angles using the 360-degree method, STARS can solve conservation-of-linear-momentum problems. STARS does not train persons to do accident reconstruction, but rather provides speedy and accurate calculations for users who know the formulas to use in various circumstances. A unique feature of STARS is its presentation of a screen with multiple items that permits the solving of unknowns from "givens" without changing screens or returning to a main menu. Another unique feature is STARS ability to print directly to a printer and simultaneously "save" the calculation to a disk file.
