A demonstration project in which two community policing officers (CPOs) were assigned to different economically disadvantaged sections of Spokane, Wash. was evaluated with respect to the expectations, perceptions, and satisfaction of both the police officers and community leaders.
Abstract
Data came from questionnaire surveys of middle school and community center administrators, direct observation of the work performance of the community policing officers after the program had become somewhat routine, and data collected by the police officers on a form developed by the researchers. Findings indicated that the CPOs were in high demand in the communities served. Citizens and police officers are highly satisfied with the program. However, a more rigorous research design is needed to measure the impact of community policing demonstration programs similar to this one. Tables, notes, and 35 references
