This profile of Nebraska commitments for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) focuses on offender residency, criminal history, age, ethnicity, marital status, education, and sentence served.
Abstract
Only admissions for DUI offenses from Nebraska counties between July 1, 1976, and May 30, 1982, were included (n=137). The average DUI commitment is a Nebraska resident committed from Lancaster or an outstate county, and he is likely to be serving his first prison term. If he has been previously incarcerated, it is likely to have been for DUI or some nonviolent offense. The DUI offender imprisoned tends to be considerably older at the time of admission than the average offender in the adult male institutional population (about 40 years old as opposed to the mid-twenties for the general inmate population). He is most likely to be white, less likely to be Hispanic or Native American, and considerably less likely to be black. His marital status tends to be divorced or separated, and he is unlikely to be married at the time of his admission. In not being highly educated, he does not differ significantly from the adult male institutional population in this respect. He is likely to have been sentenced to a term of from 1-2 years and will most probably have served 1 year or less upon release. Tabular and graphic data are provided.
